When an individual is
capable of performing a certain duty, but is disinclined to do so because of
the effort that is required, it is termed as ‘laziness’. Instead of attempting
to accomplish that specific responsibility, the individual prefers a less
strenuous activity, or even resorts to being idle. This idleness, this sluggishness
is often stigmatized and thought of in a derogatory manner. And while laziness
is derided and abhorred, the contrary is encouraged. Diligence is commended and
respected. It is esteemed and valued among man, and commanded by God. Throughout
His Word, God commands and encourages diligence both physically and
spiritually. And in one particular verse, in 2 Peter 1:10, this inspiration of
God is clearly and undoubtedly stated.

One must give all diligence to make their
calling sure, and in turn, this will make sure the fact of election. One’s
calling and election cannot be made sure in themselves, however, they must seek
it in God. For God Himself said that the Gospel came not in word only, but also
in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much assurance (1 Thess. 1:5). Thus,
it is by the effectual calling of the Spirit that one may come to know of their
eternal election of God.
