Home automation is a diverse topic
that covers a various devices that perform a lot of things. Home automation is
specifically about the technology in our home that we can modify to act
automatically on our behalf. There can be many reasons whether that’s for a
convenience, economical solution, security, entertainment, it’s all up to us.
Due to increase in consumption of energy and resources, there is a need to
reduce this consumption factor. Accessing and controlling devices from distance
can contribute a lot in conserving resources as it saves time and money. This
paper discusses the concept of smart home automation systems and various
technologies associated with it. It shows how smart devices installed at
different locations of home are helping in monitoring and control operations.

1.       INTRODUCTION:

Automation is a
technique through which multiple devices are controlled without much assistance
of a person. The need to build and deploy an automation is increasing
dramatically. With the evolution of Internet of Things (IoT), Automation has
become more common and hence more and more devices are connected together.
Automation can help us make efficient use of water and electricity and reduces
the wastage of resources. IoT connects people and things anywhere, anytime
using any kind of network. Automation is an important application of IoT. It
monitors the consumption of energy and controls environment of various
organiztions and buildings by using sensors that can control light and
temperature etc. Home automation system can be controlled from a user-interface
of desktop, mobile or tablet app.

This paper
briefs about a wide variety of current home automation system, their features
and technique.

2.       HOME
AUTOMATION:

Home Automation
is also referred to as smart home. It makes use of latest technology to
automate devices and routine tasks which make home activities secure,
convenient, easy and entertaining.  The
basic components of home automation are

User Interface:
a display in mobile, computer or tablet that is used to give commands to
control system.

Transmission
medium: The medium can be either wired or wireless like Bluetooth, radio waves
or GSM.

Central Control
System: It is a hardware device which communicates with software by controlling
home services.

Devices: There
can be any no. of devices such as lights, TV or an AC which is connected to the
central control system.

 

2.1.  Pros of Home Automation System:

The pros achieved through wireless technology are
limitless and they can’t be achieved through wired networks. Many organizations
have sensors which help in saving energy and smoke detectors. Vehicles and
Traffic lights use IoT to improve safety and regulate the flow of transportation.

2.1.1 Interconnectivity: Due to IoT, any device can be
connected and controlled from anywhere in the world using a mobile phone.

2.1.2 Security: With IoT, smart devices can be
connected to make a security system which readily notifies user in case of any
mishap no matter where he is.

2.1.3 Scalability: Wireless Network can be extended
and new devices can easily be added and modified.

2.1.4 Less Cost: The cost of automation system is less
as there is no cabling procedure required.

2.1.5 Heterogeneous Devices: IoT technology has the
ability to connect devices related to different platforms. The devices are able
to interact with other devices on different network.

2.1.6 Dynamic Behavior: The no. and state of devices
change at run time according to requirements and the way they are programmed.

 

3.       LITERATURE
REVIEW:

IOT makes use of
advanced connectivity of devices which are more than just machine to machine
communications. It involves many protocols and applications. Some of the
researches done in this field are as follows:

 

3.1. Smart
GSM based Home Automation System:

The authors of this research paper are Teymourzadeh,
R. Ahmed, S.A. , Kok Wai Chan.

The advantage of GSM based technology is that it
provides wide range making it possible to operate the system from anywhere. It
is cost effective solution for controlling distant devices. It is wireless and
can be controlled via SMS. Radio waves are used to control the communication of
mobile device with GSM module. RS232 logic converter is used for interaction
between GSM and Microcontroller. A particular pattern is followed when the
instructions are sent by the user and command is executed only if it follows
that particular pattern otherwise no action will be taken. A simulator software
called proteus software is used to build this system. The home devices are
automated and their status is send to user via SMS through the use of GSM
technology.

 

3.2.  Smart Security Solutions based on IoT:

This is a research by Chirag M. Shah, Vamil B. Sangoi
and Raj M. Visharia.

As devices are getting advanced gradually and IoT is
becoming famous, this paper gives the vision to modify the current access
control systems. This ideology makes sure that the system is wireless so as to
remove wires. Biometric sensor or a smart card reader can be used to take
inputs. Controller process the given inputs. User is granted access upon true
information and a wifi operatus is used to transmit logs wirelessly. Machine
learning algorithms are applied to check and generate analysis on given data.

 

3.3.  Design of wireless Home automation and
security system using PIC Microcontroller:

The authors of this research paper are V. Sathya
Narayanan and S. Gayathri.

The evolution of advanced technology in the domain of
electronics has brought amazing changes in our everyday life. The system
elaborates the hardware and software design and delivers different techniques
to deploy system. It also throws light on security system for fire hazards that
can be due to smoke sensor and GSM Module. This security system is handled by
the controller which informs user about smoke detected through sms.

Many technical communities are publishing research
topics to the IOT domain. Today, Sensing and actuation has evolved into more
worldly and everywhere due to which there is an overlap in these communities as
they their own vision. So eight different research topics and their related
research problems have been discussed. A prediction about future is that IoT
becomes a common utility with increased worldly experience, control and
sensing. IoT will help in producing vast knowledge from huge amount of data.
Ultimately our lifestyle will improve in a dramatic way towards high quality as

EnOcean is a smart energy/power harvesting wireless technology.
It helps in transmitting data to smart networks in designing IOT and
architectures and makes it possible to develop sensor solutions which doesn’t
require any requirement. EnOcean is a company which has dedicated itself
towards the home automation using IOT. EnOcean develops solutions for wireless harvesting
energy solutions for enterprises, smart homes, industries and also for IOT. The
advantage of EnOcean is that this technology utilizes energy in a more
efficient way. The devices produce their consumption energy themselves. There
is also less radio interference involved as it runs in 315 MHz band.

help of specialized sensors through IoT technologies. Through IoT, it is
possible to use wearable heart monitors to promote a healthy life standard.
Antenatal patients are also being facilitated through IoT platforms. IoT is
truly revolutionizing the way we live our lives. 6

 

 

5.       CONCLUSION:

The study of
various home automation techniques are discussed in this paper. The need,
advantages and applications of home automation and IoT have been briefed. The
future of home automation is very bright and its market looks very promising.
There are a lot of technologies to implement home automation including EnOcean.
The technology involved in home automation which includes Microcontroller and
GSM is cost-effective, efficient and reliable. The security is quite effective
as only authorized users can give commands by going through a specific pattern.
The major advantage of the technology is that it can be controlled from anywhere
in the world as the range of GSM is global. Due to the fast paced growing IOT,
the home automation will further expand to educational institutes, factories
and enterprises.
