Andre Junco10/12/17Period 3Mrs. HeitClothing, Styles, and DevelopmentIn the 1800s clothing was just giant shirts or tunics, but now they’ve transformed fromtunics into more modern styles. Women’s clothing, for example, changed drastically frompoorly-fitted dresses to modern style suits. Men’s clothing changed from robes and tunics intobusiness suits. Technology has had a major impact on what clothes look like by helping withprecise measurements and with designs.Women’s clothing in the 1920s were generally custom-made. The more frequent clotheswere made the more style choices changed, as well. “It was not until 1937 that the U.S.Department of Agriculture considered even conducting a study of women’s bodymeasurements,” say the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Women’s clothingchanged with work life, development life, and fashion. Most women would make homemadeclothes because it was to expensive and they might have lived far away from the tailors, as statedin Source 2, paragraph 6. The more styles changed the more production a factory could make, which led to more money. While women have had a harder time with sizes, men had it a little bit easier. Men couldchoose from different style choices like: slim fit, classic fit, and relaxed fit. Today though, ratiospersist in names of cuts and fits in men’s suits, shirts, and denim jeans. Although clothes havebeen around for awhile, a soldier’s measurements tended to have a recurring predictability ratio.Meaning, that most soldier’s uniforms were all standard sizes. Ready-made clothing would oftenfit poorly, because the products were being made at a much higher rate than before. For example,as stated in Source 1, paragraph 3, in the second sentence “A tailor might take two dozenmeasurements when making men’s clothing. That’s because they need the precise measurementsfor an exact fit. With that in mind, men need precise measurements to get a precise fit, if theycan’t get a precise fit their clothing would fit poorly.Development of clothes has changed drastically from using a spinning wheel to3-Dimensional printing machines. Technology has helped with the development of clothes byproviding the means to help design better clothing. “Each manufacturer created its own uniqueand sometimes arbitrary sizing system.”The improvements helped improve the efficiency of theclothing.” Three-dimensional printers have help with the creativity and style of the clothing, andthey also help with sizing. Because of 3D printers we have been able to quickly produce a lot ofclothing a lot faster than with a spinning wheel. The way we do things now is a lot different thanhow we used to do them in the 1920s . Back then we were practically running around “wearingtunics”(Source 1), and now we are running around wearing the most fashionable designs, andthat’s all thanks to technology. In conclusion, we learned about how technology has improved the way we dressed. Fromwearing giant robes to wearing business suits, men, and women’s clothes have changed.Technology has drastically improved how we dressed. In this essay I described how clothingsstyles have changed and how technology helped it change.
